DOCTORS , TRAINERS, AND CONQUERORS SHARE PERSONAL STORIES ON SUSTAINABLE WELLNESS

Two weeks ago, while purchasing a peanut butter and banana smoothie for Nikki at Cookout I met two nurses from Tanzania. They were attending a PhD for nurses program at Duke. Two days ago, Florence emailed me to further discuss her learning and her work. This is a part of our conversation this morning. In this YouTube interview, Florence shares how mental health is managed in Tanzania, Africa. Mental health as a medical concern is still very new in many parts of Africa. For example, in Tanzania — a country with about 65 million people — there are only 55 psychiatrists to provide care. Because of this, many people turn first to family, faith, or traditional practices when they face mental health challenges. This makes raising awareness and building stronger mental health resources even more important. Everyone deserves a fair chance to get the help they need and to live with hope, health, and dignity.
North Carolina is the fifth most popular moving destination. Its geographical diversity highlights the importance of communication clarity and strength-based self-awareness in schools and social settings. Marla, a Speech Pathologist in the Durham County School System, discusses how Geographical Differences and inquisitiveness are often misperceived.

I recently talked with a college student from Durham who had just visited New York City. His first impressions made me wonder what would a New Yorker think after visiting North Carolina?
With 525,600 minutes in a year, it’s easy to forget how much context shapes our reactions. Context matters - traffic, a bad hair day, geogrphic differences and expectations, or even a stain on your shirt. Without that context, the Dunning–Kruger effect can make us think we fully understand something or are being fully understood when we’ve only seen a small slice of it.
That’s why self-awareness matters. When you know your strengths are strengths, you stay confident, avoid misunderstandings, and move through new places with a clear sense of who you are.

The Power of Self-analysis and Self-Efficacy in understanding TBI and ADHD
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can share similar traits like challenges with attention, organization, and emotional regulation. Because of these overlaps, self-awareness becomes one of the most important tools for accurate understanding and growth.
By recognizing personal patterns, strengths, and areas of struggle, individuals can better communicate their needs and build strategies that work for them. A strengths-based approach shifts the focus from what’s “wrong” to what’s working well, empowering each person to use their abilities to adapt, learn, and thrive.

Sometimes what looks like ADHD may actually be something else — something called Hurry Sickness. It’s not listed in the DSM-5, and it’s not psychosis. It’s a stress response that can develop after one or more of life’s five greatest stressors: major loss, financial strain, work overload, relational conflict, or health challenges.
People with Hurry Sickness often feel as though they’re constantly racing against time — mentally, emotionally, and physically. Even naturally extroverted individuals can begin to appear withdrawn or experience forced introversion (often misdiagnosed as Asperger’s Syndrome, social anxiety disorder, depression, Bipolar Disorder, or avoidant personality disorder) as their brains attempt to reduce environmental overload from chronic stress.
Micro stressors — those small, daily pressures we often overlook — can be difficult to recognize without authentic self-awareness. If left unaddressed, they can lead to anxiety, depression, headaches, irritability, short temper, sleep disturbances, high blood pressure, and burnout.
The key difference with Hurry Sickness is that when you remove the stressor, change the environment, or even allow space for intentional introversion, symptoms can fade or disappear.
Unfortunately, not all physicians are familiar with this term or its effects. Confirmation Bias may even cause onlookers to assume it is ADHD or Bipolar Disorder. That’s why it’s important to seek an agile, open-minded clinician — one who sees the whole person, not just the behavior.
Here’s the reality:
Diagnosis without context can lead to misunderstanding and unnecessary medication. Context and self-awareness are your best defense. Understanding your environment—and how your brain responds to it—can reveal whether what you’re experiencing is truly ADHD or a reversible stress response.
Don't Rush to accept a label. Step back, reflect, and seek physicians who look beyond the surface. Sometimes the fastest way to heal is to slow down.
If you want to understand how context, environment, and mindset shape your focus and performance, start by building a baseline of strengths. That’s exactly why I wrote FORWARD: It is Tangible – The Student Edition.
This guide helps readers—students, families, and educators—slow down, notice patterns, and document real changes in their thinking, emotions, and habits. It’s not about labeling yourself; it’s about learning how your brain and body respond to different situations so you can advocate clearly and confidently for what you need.
🟢 Whether you’re managing school stress, supporting a child’s growth, or trying to understand your own focus patterns, FORWARD: It is Tangible gives you a structure to start strong.

Last year, Vice President JD Vance’s flight crew was my top hotel account. During their stay, we shared meaningful conversations — discussing beliefs, goals, and a few good laughs along the way. It was a reminder that self-awareness, mental health and hospitality are truly nonpartisan. It is an overall crisis with some communities seeing almost triple the diagnosis or possibly misdiagnosis.
The gentleman on the far left, Darrell, read my book. I told him to wait because it was still unedited and full of typos, but he assured me it was fine. The opportunity to uncover causes and solutions takes precedence over typos. After reading it, he shared thoughtful feedback — and even shared my book and message during flights with individuals who are now part of the current administration during their flights.
I discuss several doctors in my book. Two of them have visited the White House since JD Vance was elected.
After presenting the same information to leaders here in North Carolina since 2012, it’s inspiring to see how our conversations and the information I shared are reaching a national audience.

Dysmorphic facial features at birth are a common key indicator. You can see it in baby photos.

Under the DSM-4 published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) prior to surge in autism dysmorphic features were found in 98% of persons with autism. The DSM 5 (published in 2013) expanded the criteria for autism and increased diagnosis over 500% https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3005119/
*** Note for diagnosing.
The DSM-5 is used in the US and referenced in other countries like Australia.
Countries like the UK reference the World Health Organization and the International Classification of Diseases (ICD).
Emerging research using machine learning algorithms analyzing facial images has achieved promising results. They can distinguish between autistic and neurotypical children with an accuracy rate of about 86% to 95%. These models analyze features like facial width, eye spacing, and symmetry, supporting the idea that certain facial phenotypes are characteristic of—although not exclusive to—autism.

#MovingFORWARD Join Coach Kellye 'KJ' Jones and Dr. Valentina on Sunday, November 21st Kerry L Brooks.
Kerry L. Brooks has worked in federal law enforcement for nearly thirty years, also serving as a diplomat during this time in various countries. His most important roles, however, are those of father and husband.
In 2003, the doctor told us that our 3-year son has autism. He added that we should focus on having other children because there was nothing we could do for him. Finally, he said prepare your son to live in a group home.
Today, our son is enrolled in college and living his best life as a productive young adult. We allowed our greatest crisis to become our greatest miracle and now we provide life strategies and training for others to do the same to support their children.

Strength-based, self-awareness approach to helping a child who seems to not listen during class.
Bonnie and Darius share how they found their answer.

There are three key parts to a medical error, appropriate assessments (subjective and objective), identifying the health problem (diagnosis) and treatment (prescription, dosage, instructions, and type of physical and/ or cognitve therapy ).
Know your patterns, triggers, and habits before you’re under pressure. Urgency can make you forget small but important details that help doctors see the full picture.
A wrong diagnosis can change a person’s life path—but awareness, honesty, and clear communication can protect your health and your future.
